Understanding Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)
Overview
CAGR is the steady annual rate at which an investment would have grown to reach its final value from its starting value — smoothing out the ups and downs of the journey into one comparable number. This calculator computes it from the beginning value, ending value, and number of years, in your browser.
How to Use (Step by Step)
- 1
Enter the beginning value
The starting amount at the beginning of the period.
- 2
Enter the ending value
The value at the end of the period.
- 3
Enter the number of years
The length of the holding period. The tool returns the annualized growth rate.
How It Works
CAGR = ((ending value ÷ beginning value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1) × 100. It assumes growth compounds each period, which is why it differs from a simple average return: a fund that gains 100% then loses 50% ends flat, with a 0% CAGR but a misleading +25% simple average. CAGR is the honest measure of growth over time.
When to Use This
Comparing the long-run performance of two investments. Translating total growth over several years into an annual rate. Setting realistic return expectations for planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Average return adds yearly returns and divides; CAGR accounts for compounding. Because of volatility, CAGR is always less than or equal to the simple average and reflects actual growth.
