Calculating Sales Tax on a Purchase
Overview
Sales tax is added to the price of goods and services at checkout, and rates differ by country, state, and even city. This calculator shows the tax amount and the final total from a price and tax rate, and can also work backward from a tax-inclusive total. Everything runs in your browser.
How to Use (Step by Step)
- 1
Enter the price
The pre-tax listed price of the item.
- 2
Enter the sales tax rate
Use the combined rate for your location (state plus local, where applicable).
- 3
Read the total
The tool shows the tax amount and the final amount you'll pay.
How It Works
Tax amount = price × (rate ÷ 100), and total = price + tax. To find the pre-tax price from a tax-inclusive total, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100). Unlike VAT, sales tax is typically applied only once, at the final sale to the consumer, and is usually shown on top of the listed price rather than included in it.
When to Use This
Working out the final checkout cost of an item. Backing out the pre-tax price from a receipt total for expense reports. Comparing the true cost of a purchase across different tax jurisdictions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For an 8% rate, pre-tax price = total ÷ 1.08.
